Carol Nelson

Instructional Technologist

My Story

I started out in educaiton as a 2nd grade teacher taking over for a veteran teacher in January of 1998. Following that assignment, I spent a couple years teaching 6th grade at a middle school. While I stayed home to raise my first child, I was able to complete my masters degree in 2005. During my masters degree work I discovered a passion for teacher training and technology; in 2010, I started working with college students in education. In 2012, I began my instructional technology career working with K-12 students and teachers.

It was during those first years, that I realized how much of my job, as a technology coordinator, entailed troubleshooting. There is a fear that technology will not work after much time and effort has gone into the lesson plan. My hope is to provide a few tips and tricks that can help ease fear for when technology doesn't work.

CLEAR

Most technology issues can be solved by one examining one of these:

Cables - connection, correct port

Lights - presence and color of

Electricity - power source or connections

Alternate - control, function button or other alternate checks

Reboot - restart, hard reboot

The scenarios within are to help you "practice" some troubleshooting and hopefully give you some ideas of some quick fix solutions that you can try.

*There is a time to call IT for help. This is not a plan to replace IT, but to give you a few tricks to try that might solve the problem. You may have to use your "plan b"; if these tricks do not help your issue, and have IT help you when they can.
